Last Exploration - Ellie
What really struck me the most in this film was how our food is made and where it comes from. We don't really think about what we're eating, we simply go to the grocery store and buy food without any thought. Going to the grocery store is convenient but think about it, could people really do what these farmers do? The first quote I wrote down in my notes for this film was, "Americans fear inconvenience." This is beyond true. I also believe this film ties in very well with Berry's article. Both of these talk about where food comes from and overall businesses/corporations. For example, in a town there's small business grocery stores then a Walmart is built and the small grocery stores go out of business. I also think the smaller businesses put more effort into their produce than big corporations. In Berry's story he mentions, "commodities will be produced wherever they can be produced at the lowest cost, and consumed wherever they bring the highest price. To make too cheap and sell too high has always been the program of industrial capitalism."

this sort of relates to my essay three assignment on The Hills Market. it is a local market that has done exceptionally well against the big supermarket conglomerates. One thing we have to do is move back the trend of spreading the franchise and bringing back ma and pap stores in order to boost local economy
ReplyDeleteIt really is eye opening when watching the documentary, understanding that most of the food we consume is loaded with hormones and pesticides. Mass producing products, like you said, basically just lead to large quantities of extremely cheap products that aren't up to standards that the U.S. should hold itself to. And yeah, by relying more on local economies, small businesses will experience much growth and the quality of products will be much greater.
ReplyDeleteThis documentary was very educational and I agree that we as people don't know how our food is made and that's one point that also stood out to me. I also agree that this film connects alot with Berrys article.
