Nobel Peace Prize Speech - Ellie

The United Nations in the 21st Century was a speech given by Kofi Annan. The main purpose of this speech was to stress the fact that in order to globally prosper, nations need to come together instead of being separate. "The 20th century was perhaps the deadliest in human history, devastated by innumerable conflicts, untold suffering, and unimaginable crimes." The theme in this speech is peace and unity. Annan continues in his speech saying why the United Nations was created and what needs to happen in the future, “The role of the United Nations in the next century flow three key priorities for the future: eradicating poverty, preventing conflict, and promoting democracy." He explains that if nations and different cultures get along and become one we can go so far and rather than keeping to ourselves, not sharing any traditions and staying individual. 

From this movement I really took in what Annan said. It makes sense too, we should all put aside our differences and share our knowledge with one another. As nations, we also need to recognize our common interests and pursue them in unity. Annan wants every nation to cooperate on a global level. "When States undermine the tule of law and violate the rights of their individual citizens, they become a menace not only to their own people, but also to their neighbors, and indeed the world.” World peace is easier said than done but it is possible. It would solve so many problems and would be safe for everyone. 

I think Kofi Annan won the Nobel Peace Prize speech because it pertains to everyone, every state, and every country. His main goal is peace and is looking out for everyone’s best interest. Kofi won because of his work for a better organized and a more peaceful world. It included significant actions on human rights that gives humanitarian aid to nations that are experiencing drought, famine, and medicinal epidemics.
