"This whole war," he said. "You know what it is? Just one big banquet. Meat, man. You and me. Everybody. Meat for the bugs." This is a quote from the story Night Life. Rat Kiley in this story feels as though someday he will die during war and become meat for the bugs. This story stood out to me because it really shows what war can do to people. It shows how war can corrupt people and can make them want to do things they never thought they would do to themselves. Rat Kiley at the end of this story ends up shooting himself in the toe. This was a big enough injury to release him from duty as a medic, which was his hope when he decided to shoot himself. This incident really speaks to the stress of war and how badly people want to escape, and the measures they will go to so they can be let down of their duty.
I think the character I can relate most to is Kiowa. At war he was very quiet and passionate. He cared a lot about his fellow soldiers. He was very honest and loyal to his group. I feel if i went to war i would be like Kiowa in a sense and that's why i can relate to him.
Azar reminds me a lot of Nick from the film Rebirth. Azar shows no sympathy toward the Vietnamese by always being cruel and torturing them just like Nick shows no sympathy toward the people who killed his mom. Just like Azar fights with the Vietnamese, Nick tries to fight a kid who was fighting for the rights of the people who killed his mom Azar throughout the book is very cruel, unlike Nick because he eventually lets go of the anger he has built up over his moms death.
This story spoke to me also. It was a very good story one of the best in the book.
