Exploration 6

"I think this place stinks. It smells like. . . God, I don't even know what. It smells rotten". Field Trip had the biggest affect on me. I found this interesting because he took his daughter to Vietnam, in the exact place where Kiowa died. When they arrived, his daughter had no idea how to act, all she could think of was how terrible it smelled, which O`Brien could completely understand as everything starts to come back to him. O`Brien seemed confused, his daughter did not seem to want to be there. I could understand if O`Brien was upset with his daughter because he took her their to show her some of her fathers history and she seemed to not want to be there at all at first. It seemed like more of trip for O`Brien to make his peace with Kiowa, and i think he did by leaving his shoes in the river.

The character i could relate to the most would be Tim O`Brien. I feel like i would be the same way as him if i were drafted in to a war. Every thought he had when he got his draft notice, is what would be running through my mind. At first, i would not know where to go or what to do. Most likely, i would eventually accept there is nothing i can do to prevent it. But i couldn't imagine having the though in the back of my mind about how your going to join something that you don't believe in. How are you going to be forced in to doing something that goes against your own beliefs?

Tim O`Brien and Ling Young both had their horrific experiences and both have something to always remind them of it. Tim O`Brien fought a war he did not believe in, and killed and watched death happen right in front of his own eyes. Now all he has is memories to remind himself of these experiences. Ling Young lost loved ones in 9/11 as she survived, but had burn marks all over her body to remind her of what happened everyday. These two people will always have something to remind them of there past experiences which they wish they could go back and change but they cant.

  1. I agree that both tim and ling both will have something to remind them of their horrific experiences. They will be reminded everyday of what they went through.
