SNCC- Kelsey

In the film, "Ain't Scared of Your Jails", we learned of a committee called the SNCC.  This stands for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.  In the film this committee fought for the rights of African Americans.  The committee was inspired by the Greensboro and the Nashville sit-ins.  It was created on the campus of Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.  SNCC remained from 1960-1966.  This groups main purpose was to organize sit-ins to protest against the Jim Crow laws.  

Some interesting facts about this group was that it wasn't just in one state, they worked on projects in many different states.  Some of these states include Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, and Maryland.  SNCC played major roles in the freedom rides, sit-ins and played a major role especially in the 1963 March on Washington.

Julian Bond, a member of the Georgia House of Representatives during the time of the SNCC made a quote about the SNCC.  He said " A final SNCC legacy is the destruction of the psychological shackles which had kept black southerners in physical and mental peonage; SNCC helped break those chains forever. It demonstrated that ordinary men and women, young and old, could perform extraordinary tasks".
