Sudan Riots- Kelsey

In the past couple of months Sudan has been through some horrific events from riots and protests breaking out about gas prices to the event that I am going to write about. The Sudanese security killed a young pharmacist about a month ago. The pharmacist by the name of Salah Sanhouri was only 28 years old and was shot in the back and killed. The killing of the pharmacist forced a protest movement that has lasted for the past two weeks. This protest is very threatening to the governments grip on power in this country.
This death occurred after the gas prices were raised in Sudan. This event gave way to many protests against the government. Mr. Sanhouri was one of the protestors who was involved in these riots and when trying to run for cover in a house, he tripped and was shot. Many of his friends tried to help save him before the ambulance arrived. He was pronounced dead by a surgeon.
One of his friends spoke out about him and said "He is a symbol of a man full of patriotism who could have just enjoyed life but wanted to help his country". -Mr. Ismail
I feel as though the riots broke out because people were unhappy, and yes these riots can cause many problems but i do not feel as though it was right for the Sudanese security to full out murder a good man in the streets, in front of his friends and family, and just move along like nothing happened. This incident speaks to the growing problems being faced in Sudan today.

  1. This is a very unfortunate tragedy but it sparked a protest which can result in change. Although protests are dangerous and people usually get hurt or die, they are powerful because they show strong opposition and the government doesn't want to deal with that nonsense. It's unfortunate that sometimes sacrifices have to be made in order to create change but that's usually how it works.

  2. That is definitely a difficult story to read about and the riots that occurred do not surprise me either. It is interesting that the killing of the pharmacist sparked an entire protest movement.
