The story that affected me the most when watching the documentary "Rebirth" was the one of Nick Chirls. His story had the biggest effect on me because it was hard for me to relate to all the other people in the film. Not to say that i could relate to Nick in losing his mother because i still have mine thankfully. However I don't have a spouse, a brother and I have never been badly burned. The quote from the film that amazed me was when Nick said "as soon as i said mother for the first time in my speech a sparrow landed on my head" hearing say this alone would make it very hard to believe however they showed the actual video of Nick giving his speech about his mother in his church and you actually see the bird land on his head and let him pick it up. I can honestly say that this was one of the most incredible things i have ever seen.
The time lapse aspect to this documentary is a huge strength you slowly got to see the people change and see their attitudes change over time. you were able to see them heal and move on from the horrible grief they were feeling. if the documentary did not have this aspect it would not be the same and wouldn't offer the feeling of healing that it intended to. It was an extremely good idea for the creator of this documentary to add people because it made it very interesting and inspiring all at the same time. That would not have happened if he didn't add people into the film.
For me the thing that i took away from these peoples stories is how important the grieving process is and how you have to do your best to see the positives to what you have. I also believe that it tells you that moving on is important but you can never forget the ones you have lost. you need to always hold their memories close and never attempt to push them out of your mind, it wont work and in the end you will only cause yourself more heartache.
I agree that the time-lapse is a huge strength of this documentary. It brings the stories of the victims to life when we can't experience it, but we can feel the pain they felt and try to relate to at least one of the five people chosen to be in the film.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point about relating to Nick. He is also the person in the film I relate most closely to which makes his story much more meaningful.
ReplyDeleteI agree how you said it would be hard to believe that a sparrow landed on him but the video proof was amazing. Seeing the people change over time was a very big strength in my opinion because it just showed how people moved on in life but that day still haunted them 8 years later.
ReplyDeleteI agree is strength of healing and life experience is very important to see how people recover and fellow their daily process and everything is matter of a time to be there have some help you get through and consultant.
