Inner Peace and Human Rights (1989)
This essay talked a lot about the Tibetan culture and what humanity can do to bring peace. "Today, more than a quarter of a million Chinese troops are stationed in Tibet." I had no idea that Tibet was controlled by the Chinese and that more than a sixth of Tibet's population has died as a result of their invasion and occupation. This is unfortunate because Tibetans are known for being happy, jovial people and never do any harm to others. The Dalai Lama has a solution. He says that we should focus less on the external things in life and that inner peace is the key to happiness and peace. "When we have inner peace, we can be at peace with those around us. When our community is in a state of peace, it can share that peace with neighboring communities, and so on." Obviously, the Dalai Lama won because of all his humanitarian works around the world over the years but it's also in part because he doesn't take all the credit. He gives tribute to his mentor, Mahatma Ghandi, and credit to the Tibetan people saying that it gives them all hope.

Thats incredible how they are so overran but the chinese. This man is the symbol o peace and everything that has to deal with it. He is right about peace and happiness being the solution. But the problem is that we arent even close to that.
ReplyDeleteI also read this speech and your right it is very surprising that Tibet has been occupied by the Chinese for so long. i think the fact that the Dalai Lama is speaking of peace when his home is threatened by terror and violence speaks to his character and how inspiring he is as a man.
ReplyDeleteI really admire the fact that Dalai Lama spoke out about peace in a time of terror that threatened his life. This shows how great of a person this man is and how dedicated he is to his community and also how badly he wants change in is country.
ReplyDeleteI to read this speech and thought it was truly incredible. He definitely conveys how inner peace and external (material) peace is needed to be completely fulfilled in life. Without peace, the chances of living an enjoyable life is limited. I agree that even though he travels all over the world speaking of peace with other nations leaders and providing humanitarian action, he essentially takes no credit, but gives it to his mentor, Ghandi. He, without a doubt, is selfless in his actions, and very dearly wants peace within and between all people.
ReplyDeleteJust like you I did not know that Tibet was controlled by China until my senior year of high school. We watched a documentary on Mahatma Ghandi and the Dalai Lama. I was really fascinated by their way of peace filled lives. Overall what strikes me most about Dalai Lama is their selflessness. Everything deals with peace and if that should be reached before all else.
ReplyDeleteI had forgotten that China had controlled Tibet until reading your response. It is truly amazing how selfless the Dalai Lama is. He really wishes the best for the people of Tibet and the Tibetan culture. He wished that the culture be preserved in a time of such strife. The Dalai Lama realized the importance of culture and heritage and wanted to find a peaceful way to preserve it while being controlled by a nation with their own unique culture. He put the Tibetan culture and people first and that is completely selfless.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first I've heard that Tibet was controlled by China, that's crazy. I really like how The Dalai Lama wants people to focus on their inner-selves and work on peace instead of what's on the outside. And the fact that he doesn't take all the credit but gives some to his mentor, Mahatma Ghandi. He gives everyone hope.
