Stokely Carmichael

Stokely Carmichael is most known for two major achievements. First, he was the 4th chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). After a little over a year as chairman for SNCC, he became Honorary Prime Minister of the Black Panther Party. I find this strange because the whole idea behind SNCC is to be nonviolent and then he joins the Black Panther's whose philosophy is to defend yourself with violence if necessary. Carmichael was also one of the nine Freedom Riders who made the trip from New Orleans, Louisiana to Jackson, Mississippi. When the group arrived in Jackson, Carmichael was arrested for "disturbing the peace" and was sent to Parchman State Prison Farm. He became the youngest detainee, in the summer of 1961, at the age of only 19. Another interesting thing about Stokely Carmichael is that he was offered a full ride to Harvard but turned it down.
