The speech that I read was all about the Mayan civilization. He talked about how Mayan oppression directly stunted the technological growth of humanity. The Mayan civilization were extremely gifted in the fields of math, astronomy, agriculture, and engineering. They also had a good culture. They had many different kinds of art that left a lot of history for us to find now. The main thrust of this speech is that if we as humans could have lived together and not fought one another for power. Our world could be a much more developed race. The Mayans, a very smart and intelligent people were wiped out because of greed. And ultimately their extinction made it so that we never will know what else the Mayans could have come up with. The author of this speech even went as far to say that "If the Indian civilizations and the European civilizations could have made exchanges in a peaceful and harmonious manner, without destruction, exploitation, discrimination and poverty, they could, no doubt, have achieved greater and more valuable conquests for Humanity."
I took that we really should just all respect one another, and that we can't really judge the potential of people without really knowing them. I believe that if the Spanish actually knew how important the Mayan people could have been to the development of humanity they never would have wiped them out in the way that they did, or at least they would have tried to learn as much about the Mayan culture as possible before they wiped them out.
I think that this person won because he is very real in genuine. He is just a guy who is distraught because of the history of his people. And he really just wants there to be peace and equality. His closing remark really hit me and tied up his speech for me. He said, " That is why I dream of the day when the relationship between the indigenous people and other people is strengthened; when they can join their potentialities and their capabilities and contribute to make life on this planet less unequal.
This woman went through a rough childhood to get where she is today. She deserves his for her courage and strength and her love for her heritage and people in the Mayan society
ReplyDeleteI think the best speeches are ones that speak to the people and push for change and the best people to win these awards are people among the community that are really just genuine, good people like the guy in your speech. The speech I read also was very persuasive and pushed at equality among all people no matter your race and where you live.
ReplyDeleteI agree that he probably won because of how genuine and real he is. I think people like this are the ones who can make the most difference with their words because people will see how real and how genuine they are and they will respond and listen to what they have to say. its amazing that we have people like him to speak to us and raise concern for things that have to change in order to ensure a better planet.
ReplyDeleteI understand this start being a kid and she had suffer looking a courage therefore she earn some of her hard accomplishment goals which is to become an remarkable person.
ReplyDeleteI agree when you say we all need to respect one another. Today, it feels like the word respect doesnt apply to anything anymore, and its hard to accept. Judging the mayan culture is what led to this, and that all starts with respect.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you, as well the author. The first quote listed was pure hindsight thought, which gives people in today's world to learn from what happened and give them a chance to realize that humanitarianism is necessary. I also agree with you that if we can all maintain respect for one another, and listen and learn from other peoples ideas, we can progress as a society.
