In this blog post, by Mr. Money Mustache, explained the
importance of a goal and how much easier this lifestyle can be if you
communicate well and openly with your spouse. He refers several times to a
person’s natural need to want to make unplanned purchases. These impulse buys
can be detrimental to your budget and can throw you off track very easily. MMM
stresses that this new proposed lifestyle will be for nothing if you AND your
partner do not have an understanding of your goal and discipline.
He suggests that “having the talk” is a good place to start
when trying to get your spouse on board with the plan. The next step he
suggests is to quickly cut expenses by eliminating all wasteful spending,
mortgages and groceries being essential. One way to determine if something is
wasteful or not is to ask your partner, says MMM. For any non-grocery purchase
more than $10, check with your spouse first. He brings up a good point also as
to why we should do this. He suggests that if you are buying so much stuff so fast,
that you don’t have time to check on purchases one at a time. A millionaire is
made 10 bucks at a time says MMM.

| Black Friday Shopping (Multiple Impulse Purchases) |

I agree that it takes communicating with someone because if you dont have that then your spouse may be spending more than you want. i like the ten dollar idea because its so easy to spend alot.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a problem we have in society that is often overlooked. I definitely think communicating with your spouse, even if it is about something small you want to buy, is crucial and benefits your relationship in many ways. I like how you included a picture of shoppers on Black Friday. That shopping day in itself has brought about conflicts for people in our country, but the less impulsive buying shoppers do, the more they will save ultimately.
ReplyDeleteThis concept is one i think would be very hard to grasp. when you really think about it impulse buying is a huge thing that goes on. communication with your spouse is key to the success of saving money and becoming more wealthy.
ReplyDeleteI'm an impulse buyer… It's no secret. I just can't picture having to go to my future spouse every time I want to spend more than $10, it would get old. I get that communication is very important and there should be communication when it comes to large purchases and I agree with MMM on that. $10 is too small of a figure to be a big deal though.
ReplyDeleteI agree that communication is very important. I like to spend money freely at random times when i find stuff that i like. I would say i am an impulse buyer and i do think this concept is really hard to grasp.
ReplyDeleteI think that communication is a good idea. My sisters and I could easily go to Wal-Mart and easily end up buying something else than what we had planned to buy since our mom gave us a credit card to use on food and items we need. We try not to go as often and try not to buy as much being aware that although it isn't our personal money, it's still affecting our parents, so communicating about what we buy is important.
ReplyDeleteJust like madeline... I am also an impulse buyer. Recently though I have started managing my money better and thinking about if the item is actually a necessity. I believe communication in a relationship is huge. To control your impulse to buy something would make a relationship easier when it comes to the money.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that you should take to your spouse about things you want to purchase before you purchase them. The idea of cutting out all wasteful spending is a great way to save money and the most effective in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI agree that communication is key. Before you know it you could be running your bank account lower than you wanted because you and your spouse aren't talking about how much you can spend.
