I read Mr. Money Mustache's article called How to Ride Your Bike All Winter- And Love It. In this article he talked about the ways you are able to ride your bike no matter how cold or bad the weather is. He also talked about the many excuses people use for not riding their bike year round and he gives his advice and the wardrobe he uses to keep himself warm. He uses humor and personal experience to help get his point across. In the beginning he talks about how he drives his son to school and of course they are the only ones driving a bike in the dead of winter. Throughout the article he also talks about his personal experience with a bike and how he first rode a mountain bike in the dead of winter and this sparked his interest in always riding a bike instead of using a car.
By the end of the article he revealed what he called "Mr. Money Mustache’s Secret Wardrobe for all-weather cycling comfort". The first topic he covered was the California Winter Nights Chilly:50-68F. He suggested that you wear some jeans and a sweater or light jacket. The next topic he covered was the Colorado Winter Days Chilly:40-50F. He suggested that you add a hat on top of the jeans and jacket. The next topic he covered was the The Freezing Mark: 30-40F. At this point he said that gloves would become helpful as well as thermal pants under your jeans to help keep you warm. The next topic he covered was Winter Wonderland: 20-30F. He suggested upgrading your jacket to a ski coat. Also he suggested adding a scarf if your face becomes cold. The next topic he covered was Icicles In Your Beard And Nostrils Chilly: 10-20F. He suggested upgrading your shoes to insulated hiking boots. The last topic he covered was Canadian and Russian Winter Chilly: (10F/-12C and below). At this point it becomes very cold and hard to keep yourself warm and he suggested throwing snowboarding pants over your jeans. He said this kept him very warm.
I found this article kind of funny but also very practical. I don't think I would personally ride my bike all year round but I thought he gave great insight on how to keep yourself warm if you do wish to try to ride your bike year round.

This article seems really interesting. I wish I could be a person to not depend on a car and rather ride a bike but the convenience of a car makes us lazy. Beating the cold with a couple extra layers of clothes makes perfect sense but many of us are more likely to choose the easy way out with a heated car because we are spoiled. Riding a bike is such a great idea because it helps not only use physically to be fit but also the environment. I wish I was as willing as MMM was to always ride a bike.
ReplyDeleteIt's really cool how he utilizes riding his bike as a practical way to save money. I wish I was motivated enough to do that!
ReplyDeletethis article seemed very interesting to me it makes a lot of since that you could save tons of money if you started riding your bike rather than driving a car.it is nice that he gives insight on how to stay warm while riding your bike in the winter time.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting article . it seems very cool . ridding a bike in the winter time. how you can serve . but i don't think i can do that because am use to take my car everywhere i go..
ReplyDeleteI have thought about making a purchase on a bike sometime in my future, expecially once I get to OSU's main campus. But I think it is inspiring how Mr.Money Mustache talks about how bike riding can actually save you money. I honestly do not think I would be motivated with the cold weather to ride a bike in the winter, though.
ReplyDeleteI think it is nuts how he rides a bike everywhere even in the winter. I am not riding a bike in the freezing cold. Not happening.
ReplyDeletewhen reading this i agree that it is quite comical. but how practical. for example, the layering of the clothes would for sure cut down on mobility. What is idea of an ideal biking distance? and if it is Canadian and Russian chill there is for sure a considerable amour of snowfall on the ground, not to mention blistering winds. i understand his devotion to squeeze every penny out but when does it become inefficient?
