The Mr. Money Mustache blog post that I read was "Mustache on the Move: Am I really the Most Badass Person in my Whole Town?" In this article MMM recalled on an earlier event where he went shopping (on his bike, of course) and came to the realization that he was the only one who rode his bike to go shopping. MMM was curious as to why he was the only person to ride his bike shopping. He thought of reasons why they may not have rode bikes to the store, but he ultimately debunked all of them. His final conclusion was that he was an original, a badass, since he was the only person to ride a bike.
MMM rode his bike to go shopping at Staples and Lowe's and realized he was the only person to ride his bike. He thought people might not have rode a bike because they were physically unable, but saw everyone walking. Perhaps, he thought, they couldn't afford a bike -- nope, they all had "nice"cars (bikes are usually cheaper than cars). He thought that maybe it was the weather, but it was a gorgeous day (sunny and in the 70s). Finally, he came to his conclusion that he was the most badass person in all of Longmont, Colorado. He came to this conclusion because he couldn't come to any other one.
I think this article was somewhat humorous, but I find it hard to relate to. I think that he shouldn't be one to judge how people transport themselves from point A to point B. Generally if you are going to somewhere like Lowe's your purchases are going to be large or heavy handy-ware, things not easily transportable by bike. I think he should maybe not come to the conclusion that he is the most badass person simply because he can ride a bike. I know how to ride a bike and I don't think I'm a badass. But his opinion is simply that, his opinion, and he is entitled to it. I just don't think you're a badass for going to buy lightbulbs on a bike. Maybe, I'll ride my bike to class now. Probably not though, my car is faster.

When I think of someone riding a bike somewhere I usually come to the conclusion that they dont have the money to afford transportation not that they are just a badass.
ReplyDeleteConsidering someone who rides a bike everywhere is not my idea of a badass although it makes more sense. I agree that when it comes to transporting things for everyday life on a bike such as groceries or clothes or other items things become difficult. For this reason I believe many people choose the easy way out and just drive a car.
ReplyDeleteWow you definitely showed your opinion on that article! I agree to an extent, he shouldn't really care if someone takes a bike or a car.
ReplyDeleteWhen ever i see someone ridding a bike that doesn't mean they bad ass . because back in Africa people ride bikes because the cant afford to buy car.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that considering they're at Lowe's they might be buying bigger items that you wouldn't be able to carry on a bike. I'm not sure of how the town is, but maybe the area might not be bike friendly or that people live farther away than he does from these stores so they can't because they might not have the time.
